"I honestly don't see why you don't simply use my skills to give you a comprehensive view of the location," Vickie told him through his earpiece. "That way, there's much less chance that you might have your ass spotted. You're not the toughest guy to notice when you're out there, you know, and when things start to go sideways, I assume you'd want to have your suit closer rather than farther away. I’m not saying you can't handle yourself without one, mind you, but it's still better to have than not, right?"

Taylor leaned back in the seat of his four-by-four, closed his eyes for a few seconds, and enjoyed the music. Traffic wasn’t heavy in the area but people were still out and about. It looked like it had once been a development project that quickly ran out of money. Some of the houses were complete, others were in various states of disrepair, and many lots had no buildings at all.

It wouldn't be long until someone rolled around and tried to take advantage of the cheap real estate and began development. Of course, they’d hope the coding issues that had plagued the people who had tried it previously would simply vanish. Sometimes, a little money in the right hands could do significant good.

The parking lot he had found was directly across the street from the house in question. A small strip mall almost like his had been propped up by smaller mom-and-pop businesses, all of which provided sufficient foot and car traffic to leave him more or less invisible.

In the end, there wasn't much to see. The area was more urban than suburban, which meant the house he watched had perimeter walls, mostly maintained by two buildings on either side of it. Not many houses in the US had that kind of closed-wall system and a steel gate that opened electronically. He had only seen it open once when four men had arrived and others left again almost immediately. Logic suggested it was probably a change of the guard.

There were still enough potential problems for him to examine. If he had set up security on the location, he would have two men to patrol the outside and two men inside, connected via radios to keep each team informed of the situation with each of the teams on an ongoing basis. If they had done this, gaining entry would attract the kind of attention from the men inside that would probably end poorly for their hostage.

Taylor rubbed his cheek as he considered his options. Assuming he could enter the house without anyone seeing him, the most likely result would be that the men inside raised the alarm. If so, he would have to face four men, which left no way to avoid combat. He also didn't know what kind of weapons they carried. If one of them had armor-piercing rounds—not entirely unlikely given that the Bratva didn't mind engaging the police from time to time—even the suit wouldn't protect him from being punched full of holes.
